2008-2014: Mongrel Workshops
Once-off workshops in various venues around NSW inspired by breaking and remaking, the complicated self, and a mongrel dog. Materials: chopsticks, plastic bottles, packing tape, and newspaper. Participants begin by beheading a calico bear. The bear is transformed into a unique mongrel creature. Painting, collage, and other mixed media methods complete the process; Informed by Southeast Asian festivals and folk arts, especially transitory objects used in the ritual honouring of ancestors; Process echoes experiences of colonisation, migration, assimilation – and many other forms of adaptation and change. It is about loss, violence and healing. Ages 8 up; With and without previous art experience.
